nuts about bikes in Jamaica Plain

Spring Roll 2013 is May 12!

(Update at 9 am: Well it's looking a little droopy out there but there's a significant chance of no precipitation! (how's that for optimism?) So we're gonna head over, set up, drink some coffee and talk about bikey stuff. See you there we hope! )

This year's Spring Roll! is just around the corner - this Sunday May 12. This is our fifth year doing this ride. At first some showers were forecast, but it's definitely looking more promising.

New this year will be an instructor from the City of Boston's Bike program running a Bike Rodeo, which is a bike safety and skills course for children. As usual, there will be a table of bike decorations and helpers to get your bike all dressed up for the ride. You can also expect the stereo bike to be there leading the parade with some funky tunes, some great snacks from a bunch of local JP stores and cafes, info tables from bike-related orgs like the Boston Cyclists Union and Bikes not Bombs, and pre-ride bike check-ups and demos of family-friendly bikes and accessories from our friends at Ferris Wheels.

So get to the South Street Mall (at South St. and Carolina St) by 10 am to hang out and get ready for the ride, which leaves at 11 am. The ride itself is a 3.6 mile loop up through Hyde and Jackson Squares, down the Southwest Corridor to Forest Hills, and then back up to the start. We'll take it slow, but for those with very small children that may not be able to keep up or do that distance, we ask that you keep them entertained at the start so that both the ride and our ride support team don't get too stretched out.

Keep an eye on our website or our facebook event page for updates, and hope to see you on Sunday!

Another flat tire...

Removed bike rack and fold-out wire baskets attached to it. Fixed bike rack (ok, I used a thick layer of duct tape where the weld broke) and replaced, moved forward from it’s previous position. Re-attached fold-out wire baskets in a new position with braces in a new position. Hopefully that will hold for a while. I always thought that both bike shops could have done a better job and moved the adjustable rods forward, so the weight was more centered, and wonder if the placement contributed to…
